For the first time, the SaloneSatellite Permanent Collection arrives in Indonesia at Indonesia Design Week 2026 in IDD PIK2, showcasing works by emerging designers who have transformed the global design landscape.
For readers of Written.id who closely follow the global design scene, SaloneSatellite is hardly a new name. For nearly three decades, it has served as the birthplace of ideas that have gone on to shape contemporary design. It is where emerging designers from around the world first introduce experimental concepts, prototypes, and bold visions—many of which eventually evolve into globally recognized design icons.
Now, for the very first time, the platform that has championed designers under the age of 35 since 1998 will be presented in Indonesia.
Following acclaimed presentations in Hong Kong in 2024 and the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Jakarta has been selected as the next international destination to host the SaloneSatellite Permanent Collection Exhibition 1998–2026. More significantly, Indonesia marks the first stop of SaloneSatellite's latest international tour, underscoring the growing recognition of Southeast Asia as an increasingly influential force in the global design landscape.
Running from 18 September to 18 October 2026 at the Townhall of Indonesia Design District (IDD) PIK2, the exhibition will serve as one of the key highlights of Indonesia Design Week (IDW) 2026. Over the course of a month, visitors will have the opportunity to explore 55 carefully selected works drawn from SaloneSatellite's Permanent Collection of 415 objects. Together, these pieces chronicle the remarkable journey of visionary ideas conceived by young designers—ideas that have since evolved into internationally celebrated products and milestones in contemporary design history.
For Indonesia Design District PIK2, hosting the exhibition represents far more than bringing an internationally renowned showcase to Jakarta. It creates a platform for dialogue between Italy's rich design heritage and Indonesia's rapidly growing creative ecosystem. Designers, architects, industry leaders, developers, students, and design enthusiasts alike are invited to experience how design can become a universal language that bridges cultures, generations, and disciplines.

The Indonesia Design Week (IDW) 2026 embraces the theme Collective Culture, highlighting collaboration as the driving force behind the future of design. The annual festival presents a diverse program of exhibitions, installations, talks, workshops, retail activations, and community-led initiatives across Pantai Indah Kapuk, including Indonesia Design District, Batavia PIK, Pantjoran PIK, Central Market PIK, By The Sea PIK, Land's End PIK, and Orange Groves PIK2.
Among its many programs, the SaloneSatellite Permanent Collection stands out as one of IDW's most anticipated international collaborations. It embodies the festival's guiding philosophy—Crafted in Collaboration, Curated by Culture, and Built Through Diversity—affirming that the future of design is shaped through the exchange of ideas, diverse perspectives, and meaningful collaborations across disciplines and borders.
The exhibition also celebrates the enduring vision of Marva Griffin Wilshire, Founder and Curator of SaloneSatellite. Since launching the platform in 1998, she has remained committed to nurturing emerging designers by connecting them with industry leaders, supporting the development of new ideas, and creating pathways for their work to reach the global market. For Marva, the Permanent Collection is not simply an archive, but a living landscape where designers, manufacturers, materials, cultures, and new opportunities continue to intersect.
Marva Griffin Wilshire will also travel to Jakarta in her capacity as Ambassador for Italian Design Day. Together with the Italian Cultural Institute Jakarta, her presence reinforces the cultural dialogue between Italy and Indonesia through design. Meanwhile, the exhibition will be designed by architects Ricardo Bello Dias and Hariadna Pinate, recreating the distinctive atmosphere of SaloneSatellite and offering visitors an experience reminiscent of the exhibition in Milan.
Among the international collection, one piece carries particular significance for Indonesia. Plank Chair, designed by Studio Hendro Hadinata in collaboration with local brand EVERY Collections, will symbolically return home as part of the SaloneSatellite Permanent Collection. Its inclusion reflects Indonesia's growing presence on the international design stage, demonstrating that locally conceived design can stand confidently alongside some of the world's most celebrated works.

The exhibition also builds upon Indonesia Design District's expanding presence on the international stage. Earlier this year, IDD PIK2 participated in Salone del Mobile.Milano through the IDD Pavilion, showcasing Indonesia's contemporary design identity alongside the country's rich craftsmanship in rattan, wood, weaving, metal, and ceramics. With the arrival of the SaloneSatellite Permanent Collection in Jakarta, that relationship continues to deepen, opening new opportunities for cultural exchange and collaboration between Indonesia and one of the world's most influential design platforms.
