The Beauty of Songket Meets Didit Hediprasetyo’s Couture Touch on the Leica D-Lux 8

Didit Hediprasetyo collaborates with Leica Indonesia on a limited-edition Leica D-Lux 8 featuring a songket-inspired motif.

When it comes to the beauty of Indonesian textiles, songket is hard to overlook. Recognized for its intricate weaving techniques and the use of gold or silver threads, this traditional textile is not only associated with luxury, but also carries layers of cultural identity passed down through generations. As times change, songket continues to find new forms of expression through creative interpretations. One of the latest comes from a collaboration between designer Didit Hediprasetyo and Leica Indonesia.

The collaboration resulted in the Leica D-Lux 8 Limited Edition by Didit Hediprasetyo, a special-edition camera that brings together Leica’s premium photographic technology and elements of Indonesian cultural heritage. Its most distinctive detail can be found on the camera body, which features a Herringbone Songket motif—Didit’s contemporary interpretation of the beauty of Nusantara’s songket weaving. The launch forms part of Didit’s 33rd couture collection, Weaving Through a Traveller’s Eye, which explores travel, culture, and the different ways people see and experience the world.

For Didit, travel has long been an endless source of inspiration. Every culture he encounters offers a new opportunity to understand beauty from a different perspective. These experiences often find their way into his work, where traditional elements are reinterpreted through a contemporary and universal lens.

The design itself was the result of a lengthy creative process. Before arriving at the final motif, Didit and his team experimented with several different variations.

“Before this motif was selected, we tried several variations, including black on black, white on white, black on silver, and so on. This was the one we ultimately chose. The design process took around six months,” said Didit Hediprasetyo.

The result gives the Leica D-Lux 8 a distinctive character while retaining the camera’s original identity. Known for its compact form and high performance, the camera now carries a visual language inspired by songket weaving, balanced by Leica’s signature minimalist aesthetic. Available in black-and-white and black-and-silver combinations, it becomes an unexpected meeting point between contemporary technology and Nusantara’s cultural heritage.

The choice of the Leica D-Lux 8 as the medium for the collaboration was also deliberate. According to Bernard F. Suwanto, Director of Leica Indonesia, the camera’s character naturally complements the collection’s focus on travel.

“We chose the Leica D-Lux for our first collaboration with an Indonesian designer because of its compact form and how easy it is to carry anywhere, especially when traveling,” said Bernard F. Suwanto, Director of Leica Indonesia.

The collaboration brings together two worlds that share a deep appreciation for precision and attention to detail. Songket is created through a meticulous weaving process, while Leica has spent more than a century developing optical technology and imaging systems renowned for their precision and quality.

For Didit, the collaboration is also an opportunity to introduce Indonesia’s cultural richness to a wider audience through a medium that feels relevant to contemporary life. He believes cultural heritage should not simply be preserved as an artifact of the past, but given room to evolve through new interpretations that can speak to different generations and audiences.

As a tribute to Didit’s 33rd couture collection, the Leica D-Lux 8 Limited Edition by Didit Hediprasetyo is produced in a strictly limited run of just 33 units. Each camera represents a meeting point between art, culture, fashion, and technology, brought together in a highly exclusive collectible object.

To accompany the launch, Didit also presented a short film titled Weaving Through the Lens of the Heart. Directed by Didit himself with cinematographer Davy Linggar and composer Yovie Widianto, the film was shot across Jakarta, Solo, and Venice. Through a series of poetic visuals, it explores the relationship between travel, culture, and creativity, and how these experiences can shape new ways of seeing tradition.

Ultimately, the collaboration is a reminder that tradition is never truly static. Much like songket, which continues to find new forms of expression from one generation to the next, cultural heritage remains alive when it is given space to evolve, adapt, and speak to the world in a language that feels relevant to its time.
