Indonesian Contemporary Art & Design (ICAD), the annual art and design exhibition was officially opened for the 14th time on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. The opening night of ICAD was also attended by Sandiaga Uno, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia and Ridwan Kamil, an art lover who has also participated in this exhibition.
This year, the 14th ICAD carries the theme “Unexpected”, the unexpected realities that occur in society in the past, present, and future.
At this exhibition, we can enjoy various works from 74 people. artist and national and international designers. The works are divided into four focuses: fantasy or fiction, under-recognized narratives, art and design created during times of uncertainty, and the relationship between humans and nature. Amanda Ariawan, representing the ICAD 14 curatorial team, explained some of the works:
- AD Pirous “Embers Then Lit Now"

ICAD 14 presents a special tribute to the work of the late AD Pirous. Four categories of works are displayed in a dedicated room: calligraphy, consisting of letters with meaning, and random letters with no meaning. Explorations of pottery placed randomly in three-dimensional shapes create an interesting look. Explorations of objects, working with sand and other materials. Finally, the creation of unique patterns using cutting techniques.
- “Cuckoo”Chromarama"

Three woven fabrics jacquard With different colors and sizes, it beautifully hangs. There's a story behind the creation of this work. Laura Luchtman, the fabric designer, was fascinated by human vision. She began studying the spectrum of color blindness to create a fabric that could be enjoyed by both normal and colorblind people. When viewed by a colorblind person, this fabric will produce different and beautiful colors.
- Anang Saptoto "Fertile Actors, Prosperous Actors"

Artist Anang Saptoto's work, a reading park and food garden in Pela village, Mampang, is a collaboration with Trisakti architecture students. The work was commissioned by the local community when Anang visited the area and sought to hear their aspirations and desires.
At this exhibition, he displayed only fabrics designed for the location of the reading park and food garden. There was a container provided for anyone wishing to donate books to the reading park.
- Floating Labtek and Pppooolll “Muara Gembong Speaks"

Four acrylic boxes filled with water from Muara Gembong, contaminated with hazardous substances, are lined up. Labtek Apung and Pppooolll are highlighting the relationship between humans and nature, noting the alarming condition of the fauna in Muara Gembong. Many primates come to residential areas simply in search of clean water.
Uniquely, on the wall there is a draft a letter of agreement made between humans and animals to be able to live side by side. More than just gimmickThis letter was prepared based on the results of consultations with legal experts.
- Anggun Priambodo "Sri Rejeki is the name of the shop"

Featuring an interactive installation with a shop concept, 300 items are displayed from various cities in Indonesia, ranging from food to toys. Visitors can also purchase these items. Upon entering the installation, they are greeted by a song composed by Anggun Priambodo. Sri Rejeki is one of the five songs.
In addition to the art and design exhibitions, ICAD 14 offers approximately 50 programs for visitors to participate in each day. The exhibition will run from October 10 to November 10, 2024, at the Grandkemang Hotel in Jakarta and is open to the public.
